Romanians Forced to Beg in Athens: Criminal Network Exposed

A criminal organization exploiting Romanian nationals economically and labor-wise has been dismantled by Greece’s FBI unit with support from U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). So far, three ringleaders have been arrested on human trafficking charges; seven others remain at large. Authorities seized over €4,800 in cash—including coins—multiple vehicles, travel documents, money transfer receipts, mobile phones, handwritten notes, and a victim’s passport illegally held by the suspects. The operation took place in Athens on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. Investigators found the group had operated since at least 2021, targeting vulnerable Romanian men facing financial hardship or health issues. Victims were lured to Greece with false promises of legal employment, then coerced into begging at traffic lights and busy locations across Attica after having their passports confiscated and being confined to apartments. Some were threatened or falsely told they owed money to keep them silent. Twelve Romanian victims have received assistance so far, and Greek authorities are cooperating with Romania to identify additional victims. Suspects face charges including criminal organization, human trafficking, exploitation through begging, assault on vulnerable persons, unlawful possession of third-party travel documents, and providing transportation to facilitate crime. Arrested individuals have been referred to the competent prosecutor.
