A wildfire broke out in low vegetation near the local community of Ergani in Rodopi on Thursday, 16 July 2026, at around 6:30 p.m., prompting an immediate emergency response from the Hellenic Fire Service.
Joint Ground and Air Operations Underway
On the ground, 24 firefighters are operating with seven fire engines and a specialized pedestrian unit from the 7th Mobile Unit for Disaster Response (7th EMODE). From the air, three aircraft and one helicopter are conducting water-dropping operations.
Water tankers from the Municipality of Maroneia–Sapes are also supporting suppression efforts, assisting the Fire Service in its operations.
Real-Time Monitoring and Investigation Launched
The Unified Coordination Center for Operations and Crisis Management (ESKEDIK) is continuously monitoring the fire’s progression using drone footage equipped with both optical and thermal imaging.
Meanwhile, the Xanthi Arson Investigation Team has been dispatched to the site to determine the cause of the blaze.
