Rise in Road Accident Fatalities in Western Greece and Peloponnese in 2024 – What the Data Shows

The toll of blood was heavy in Western Greece and the Peloponnese in the year that has passed. More fatalities from road accidents were recorded in 2024 compared to 2023 on the road networks of the regions of Western Greece and the Peloponnese, according to data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority. In the region of Western Greece, there was an increase in the number of injuries and road accidents and incidents. Conversely, in the Peloponnese region, the number of injuries and road accidents decreased. Specifically, in 2024, across all three regional units of Western Greece (Aetolia-Acarnania, Achaea, Elis), 422 road accidents and incidents were recorded, where 52 people lost their lives and 559 were injured severely or lightly, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority. In 2023, 398 road accidents and incidents had been recorded, where 45 people had lost their lives, while a total of 480 had been injured. In the five regional units of the Peloponnese (Argolis, Arcadia, Corinthia, Laconia, Messenia) in 2024, 256 road accidents and incidents were recorded, where 52 people lost their lives and 292 were injured severely or lightly. The previous year, 269 road accidents and incidents had been recorded, where 42 people had lost their lives and a total of 300 had been injured. The most accidents occurred in August with 53, and the least in March with 19. The highest number of fatalities was recorded in June with 8, and the lowest in July with one victim. The most severe injuries were recorded in August with 8, while no serious injuries were recorded in January. The highest number of minor injuries was recorded in August with 67, and the lowest in March with 24 victims. According to the National Statistical Authority, the data for each regional unit of Western Greece for 2024, compared to 2023, are as follows: *In Aetolia-Acarnania, in 2024, 181 road accidents and incidents were recorded, resulting in 14 fatalities and 16 severe injuries, while minor injuries reached 225. In 2023, 186 road accidents and incidents had been recorded, resulting in 16 fatalities, 14 severe injuries, and 217 minor injuries. *In Achaea, in 2024, 160 road accidents and incidents were recorded, resulting in 21 fatalities, 13 severe injuries, and 210 minor injuries. In 2023, 150 road accidents and incidents had been recorded, resulting in 16 fatalities, 9 severe injuries, and 167 minor injuries. *In Elis, in 2024, 81 road accidents and incidents were recorded, resulting in 17 fatalities, 6 severe injuries, and 89 minor injuries. In 2023, 62 road accidents and incidents had been recorded, resulting in 13 fatalities, 13 severe injuries, and 69 minor injuries. The most fatalities were recorded in Achaea, and the highest number of injuries and road accidents in Aetolia-Acarnania. For the Peloponnese region, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority, the most road accidents and incidents occurred in August with 36, and the least in February with 11. The highest number of fatalities was recorded in July with 9 victims, and the lowest in March and November with two victims each month. The most severe injuries were recorded in February, July, and December with 3 victims each month, while no serious injuries were recorded in March. The highest number of minor injuries was recorded in August with 51, and the lowest in February with 5 victims. Overall, the most fatalities were recorded in Messenia, and the highest number of injuries and road accidents in Corinthia.
