Former coach of Panathinaikos and the Greek National Team, Rick Pitino, continues to build his legendary status in college basketball as he led St. John’s University to victory in the Big East title, defeating Creighton 82-66. After 25 long years, St. John’s has reclaimed its place atop the Big East standings and is now set for the NCAA’s March Madness tournament, transforming its image under Pitino’s leadership. The American Hall of Famer has made history as the first NCAA coach to lead six different teams to March Madness, having previously achieved this feat with Boston University, Providence, Kentucky, Louisville, and Iona. Notably, a Greek player, Leandros Liotopoulus, is part of the team but did not compete in the St. John’s vs. Creighton game, as he is still a freshman.
