Rhodes Tragedy: Grandmother Recalls Moment Before Child Drowned in Pool

The community of Rhodes remains deeply affected by the tragic drowning of a 3-year-old girl during a children’s party. The child’s grandmother, who was accompanying her on that fateful day, described to LiveNews how events unfolded in a matter of moments. “There was no lifeguard present; the child was sitting outside the pool area. I had just put sunscreen on her and went to fetch a towel to help her get out. It only took two or three minutes, but she leaned over and fell into the water,” recounted the grandmother. A father of another child at the scene witnessed the tragedy, pulling the unconscious girl from the water. Parents of other children initiated CPR immediately. Despite their efforts and those of medical professionals at the Rhodes Hospital, they were unable to save the child’s life. According to Greek law, all pools must have a lifeguard regardless of depth if the accommodation has more than 50 rooms. The owner of the bar-restaurant where the incident occurred was arrested for involuntary manslaughter due to negligence and violating health regulations but was later released on bail.
