In a tragic development, doctors at Athens’ Agia Sofia Children’s Hospital performed an amputation of the right leg of a six-year-old boy who was critically injured in a road accident near Schinari, a village in the Rethymno region of Crete, on 1 July. The procedure took place on 10 July, following days of intensive surgical efforts to save the limb.
Severe Injury Leads to Amputation Despite Extensive Care
According to reports by Rethymniotika Nea, despite multiple surgeries and round-the-clock care from specialized pediatric trauma surgeons, the severity of the injury ultimately made limb preservation impossible. The boy remains hospitalized at Agia Sofia Children’s Hospital, where he was urgently transferred after the crash.
Accident Details and Emergency Response
The child was riding as a passenger on a motorcycle driven by his father when it collided with a passenger car under circumstances still under investigation. The impact caused catastrophic damage to his lower limb. He was first admitted to Rethymno General Hospital, but due to the gravity of his condition, an emergency air evacuation was arranged to transport him to Athens for advanced pediatric trauma care.
In the days following admission, medical teams carried out several interventions in an effort to restore blood flow and tissue viability. Ultimately, however, clinical assessment determined that amputation was the only viable option to prevent life-threatening complications.
