Petros Makris, the celebrated Greek journalist, passed away at the age of 85. His passing was announced by the Hellenic Journalists’ Association, which expressed its deep sorrow. According to the announcement, Petros Makris, who ‘departed’ on Monday morning (June 2, 2025), was born in Livadeia in 1940. He graduated from the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1972 but had already begun his career as an editor for the newspaper ‘Nea Politia’ in 1969. During the same period, he started collaborating with the National Radio and Television Foundation in the News and Information Broadcasting Service, where he was responsible for writing, editing, and presenting various broadcasts such as ‘Echoes of Events,’ ‘From Day to Day,’ ‘Traveling Here and There,’ and ‘Archaeological Treasures.’
As a commentator, researcher, and columnist, Makris worked for numerous publications including ‘Eleftherotypia,’ ‘Kathimerini,’ ‘Athinaiki,’ ‘Hemerisia,’ radio stations ‘Flash 96.1’ and ‘ERA,’ magazines ‘Tachydromos,’ ‘Epikaira,’ and ‘Zygos,’ and the Ministry of Press and Mass Media as the head of the Analysis and Documentation Department. Even after retiring, he continued contributing articles to the news website ‘in.gr.’ Among his career highlights were receiving the award from the ‘Foundation for the Promotion of Journalism Athanasios Botsis’ for his distinguished overall performance and organizing a historic meeting between the rival commanders of the civil war, Thrasyvoulos Tsakalotos and Markos Vafeiadis, in 1984.
A restless spirit and tireless intellectual worker, Makris also engaged in writing, painting, and music alongside his journalism career. He studied Art History both in Greece and abroad and became a member of the Fine Arts Supervisory Board of Greece. He held solo art exhibitions, participated in group shows, and donated a lithographic copy of his work ‘Rebetiko Diachronic Ecumenical Summit’ to the Hellenic Journalists’ Association. Among his authored books are ‘Marxists and Orthodoxy – Dialogue or Debate?’ (1983) and ‘Mikis Theodorakis – Hidden Truths’ (1986). He actively participated in the actions of the Hellenic Journalists’ Association, labor strikes, and numerous conferences.
The Administrative Council extends its condolences to his family and fondly bids farewell to this worthy colleague. Petros Makris’s funeral will take place on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at 11 a.m., at the Livadeia Cemetery.
