Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed satisfaction that Donald Trump did not impose new tariffs on her country, beyond those already announced for the automotive industry, steel, and aluminum. “This is good for the country. It has to do with the good relationship we have built between the Mexican and American governments,” said the president regarding Trump’s tariffs. The decision by Trump to exempt Mexico means the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) remains intact, commented Finance Minister Marcelo Ebrard, calling it a “great success.” “Our goal for the next 40 days is to secure the best trade agreements for the automotive industry, steel, and aluminum,” he added. Mexico hosts 37 major automotive manufacturing plants (Audi, BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Stellantis, Toyota, Volkswagen, etc.), according to the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA). Sheinbaum stated that the government will announce measures to strengthen the country’s position in future negotiations with the U.S.
