The countdown is on for the start of Release Athens 2025, the biggest music festival of the year. Audiences are eagerly anticipating live performances from some of the most renowned names in Greek and global music. On Saturday (July 19, 2025), Release Athens welcomes Lacuna Coil to Nerou Square. The largest Italian metal band and a true legend of the darker side of heavy sound will perfectly complement Gojira’s powerful night. Lacuna Coil emerged in the mid-90s from Milan’s underground scene and evolved into one of the most important gothic metal acts globally. Combining heavy riffs with charismatic vocals by Christina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro, they quickly distinguished themselves. In 2002, their third album ‘Comalies’ brought them international fame. Their successful discography includes ‘Karmacode,’ ‘Delirium,’ and ‘Black Anima.’ They also won Best Live Act at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards in 2018. Their latest release, ‘Sleepless Empire,’ has been critically acclaimed. On Wednesday (July 23, 2025), Release Athens hosts Dream Theater. With their classic lineup back after Mike Portnoy’s return, the iconic American progressive metal band celebrates 40 years of excellence. Since forming in 1985 at Berklee College of Music, Dream Theater has sold over 15 million albums, won a Grammy, topped charts worldwide, and revolutionized progressive metal. Their extensive discography features classics like ‘Images And Words,’ ‘Awake,’ and ‘Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory.’ Their new album ‘Parasomnia’ promises another monumental achievement. Also performing that day are Mastodon and Haken. Mastodon has become one of the most influential modern metal bands, pushing boundaries since 2000. Their groundbreaking work includes ‘Leviathan’ and ‘Crack The Skye.’ Meanwhile, Haken represents cutting-edge progressive rock/metal with innovative releases such as ‘Aquarius,’ ‘The Mountain,’ and ‘Fauna.’ This explosive night marks the grand finale of Release Athens 2025.
