Relative of Arrested Greek Air Force Colonel: “He May Have Been Framed”

“He may have been framed…” says a relative of the 54-year-old Hellenic Air Force squadron leader arrested for espionage and leaking classified military documents to China. The officer was detained for allegedly collecting and transmitting sensitive military information to third parties—specifically individuals or channels linked to China—with potential harm to national interests. A family member told newsit.gr they cannot believe he is involved: “I can’t believe this. He’s impeccable in every way—I don’t think he’s capable of such a thing. I believe something else is going on. I’m waiting for more evidence, as I’ve heard nothing official yet. I think he may have been framed.” The colonel had served for many years in high-responsibility roles and was due for retirement soon. According to reports, Greece’s National Intelligence Service (EYP), with support from the CIA, had monitored him since October and discovered encrypted documents allegedly sent to Chinese recipients. His distinguished background includes expertise in communications, IT systems, radar software development, NATO-accredited evaluation in Communications and Information Systems (CIS), and advanced studies in weapons systems and modern technology. He also specialized in cybersecurity implications for critical infrastructure, telecommunications, and aviation—high-value competencies for any defense leadership role. The compromised data reportedly included classified information on military communications, operational procedures, troop and asset movements, and NATO information flows—posing serious risks not only to Greek national security but also to Alliance integrity.
