Today (March 27, 2025), Vladimir Putin stated that Donald Trump’s plans to take control of Greenland are “serious.” The Russian president expressed his concern that the Arctic could become a flashpoint for potential conflicts. Speaking at a conference in Murmansk on Arctic issues, Putin emphasized that these U.S. plans regarding Greenland have deep historical roots. He stressed that geopolitical tensions are escalating in the Arctic but noted that cooperation in the region remains possible, including between Moscow and Western states. However, Putin also mentioned Moscow’s unease with NATO focusing on the area for possible bases, stating that Russia must strengthen its fleet of icebreakers. He called on the Russian government to consider building new shipyards. The number of Russian troops in the Arctic will increase, he said. Putin reiterated his intention to boost trade through the Northern Sea Route via Arctic waters as Russia shifts its trade towards Asia and away from Europe due to Western sanctions. He concluded by saying that Moscow has never threatened anyone in the Arctic but is ready to defend its interests.
