CORVERSE The sculptor created the moon in 1997, when Thessaloniki was the European Capital of Culture and the process lasted three years. It is recalled that he had been vandalized and thrown into the sea by strangers and his creator eventually pointed to the sea as a new place, so as to protect himself. Paul Vasiliadis, a visual artist and psychiatrist, was born in 1946 in Thessaloniki and studied medicine, specializing in psychiatry. His first solo exhibition dates back to 1971 (Galerie Zeta-Mi, Thessaloniki) and related to mythological themes. Since then, seventeen other solo exhibitions have been counted in Athens and Thessaloniki, while its participations in groups exceed thirty. Among them are Art 10 in Basel, Switzerland (1979), the Biennale of São Paulo (1983), and Dimitria, Thessaloniki (1985,1989, 1993, 1995, 2001). His works belong to: the National Gallery, the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, the Society of Macedonian Studies, the Telloglio Foundation and the Gallery of Rhodes. The artist exhibited paintings moving in the field of critical realism and were often accompanied by small-sized constructions, which expanded the theme of painting in the 3D space (Coins, Cities, Parbriz). The Early 1980s Reflections marked his transition to ways of expression that are near abstract expressionism. With emphasis on the importance of gesture and the dynamic use of color, the artist attributes the shadows of trees to the parks and sidewalks, the reflection of pedestrian and wheeled traffic on the showcases of shops on the streets of the city.
