“We could have had fatalities,” professor Yiannis Mazis, chair of the Department of Turkish and Modern Asian Studies, told newsit.gr, referring to the violent incidents that occurred on April 30 during an event. Masked individuals stormed in and attacked students, resulting in one being injured. “It was extremely dangerous what happened yesterday. The masked individuals entered shouting ‘you will die, you are finished.’ At that moment, about half the students were in the room, most of them girls, including a pregnant woman and another with health issues,” he explained. Four male students were inside, one being his doctoral student, who bravely attempted to push them out of the room, which led to clashes. According to Professor Mazis, panic ensued as the doctoral student faced a group attack. “They started hitting him all at once, eight of them. They hit him with their helmets and some kind of swinging clubs and threw bottles at him. This young man moved us because they were pulling him, and he was pushing them back down the entire staircase to prevent them from harming anyone else.” The staircase was covered in blood, and eventually, the Emergency Medical Service arrived and took the student to the hospital. He was severely beaten and covered in blood. Yesterday’s event was meant to highlight career opportunities for graduates of the Department of Turkish and Modern Asian Studies. The attack occurred around 8 p.m., when eight fully masked individuals, wearing black from head to toe and carrying helmets, ascended the stairs. One held a fire extinguisher, which they used against the professors present before proceeding to break tables and enter the room where the chaos unfolded.
