A fire, following an arson attack, engulfed one of the historic buildings at Althorp Estate yesterday (May 28, 2025), where Princess Diana grew up alongside her siblings – Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Lady Jane Fellowes, and brother Charles. Her brother, Charles Spencer, the Earl of Spencer and manager of the family estate, revealed the news of the arson and vandalism through a post on X (formerly Twitter). He shared photographs and expressed his grief over the destruction. In his X post, he wrote: “I’m shocked that one of the cottages at @AlthorpHouse – thankfully unoccupied – was burned down by vandals last night. Thank you to the fire service for their excellent efforts. It’s so distressing to think anyone finds this kind of act entertaining.” He followed up with an Instagram story: “Fortunately unoccupied at the time, but deeply concerning that one of our cottages was torched by vandals last night. Sincere thanks to the fire service who tried to save it.” Princess Diana lived at Althorp from the time of her parents’ divorce until her marriage to Prince Charles, now King Charles III, in 1981. More details about the destruction were provided by the head gamekeeper of the estate, Adey Greeno. “The cottage we lost last night due to a deliberate act of vandalism had to be demolished for safety reasons. It’s very upsetting. The world we live in,” he wrote.
