President Tsoukalas: Greek Borders Are in Safe Hands, No One Can Challenge Them

President of the Hellenic Republic Konstantinos Tsoukalas affirmed today (15 May 2026) that Greece’s borders are secure and beyond dispute, during a visit to the National Park at the Evros River Delta.

A Symbol of Strength and Stewardship

Speaking at the site, President Tsoukalas said: “The Greek borders are in safe hands—and no one, absolutely no one, can challenge them. We proved this during the February–March 2020 crisis. And we are confident that, whenever called upon again, we will demonstrate equal effectiveness.”

The President described his visit as deeply inspiring—not only for the unmatched natural beauty of the Evros Delta, a unique and invaluable wetland, but also for the dedication of Greece’s border guards. He praised the Greek Armed Forces, the Hellenic Police, and local fishermen who patrol the delta daily, acting as vigilant stewards of this ecologically sensitive area.

An Ecological Treasure and a Strategic Frontier

“As a State, we are determined to safeguard this ecological treasure—which also serves as our eastern border,” Tsoukalas emphasized. “That eastern frontier, facing Turkey, remains under constant attention, scrutiny, and protection. Our borders are secure—and no one can question that.”

Accompanied by military and police units, the President boarded a Hellenic Police patrol vessel to navigate the delta’s intricate waterways. Greek Army patrol boats joined the journey. He toured the river’s estuaries, visited traditional fisherman’s huts, and expressed admiration for the region’s extraordinary natural environment.

A Protected Wetland of Global Significance

The Evros Delta is renowned for its rich biodiversity—hosting hundreds of bird species, including flamingos, pelicans, and herons. It is protected under international agreements, including the Ramsar Convention and the EU’s Natura 2000 network. The area plays a vital role in eco-tourism, birdwatching, and environmental education.

At the Ainisio Delta Service Hut—the final stop of the visit—President Tsoukalas was briefed on joint border surveillance efforts by the military and police, incorporating cutting-edge technology. He was accompanied by senior defense officials, including Lieutenant General Panagiotis Kavidos, Commander of the Supreme Military Command of Thrace, and Major General Pavlos Andrikopoulos, Commander of the XII Infantry Division.
