An unimaginable tragedy unfolded in Portugal, where an 18-month-old girl died after being left inside a school bus for approximately eight hours in Almada, a municipality in the Setúbal region.
Child Boarded Bus But Never Disembarked
According to Portuguese news agency Lusa, the toddler—named Sofia—boarded the school bus around 8:00 a.m. on Thursday for transport to a daycare center in Setúbal. However, for reasons still under investigation, she never got off the vehicle. Instead, she remained inside the parked bus, which was stationed next to the daycare’s facilities.
Her absence went unnoticed throughout the day. Staff at the daycare only realized she was missing shortly before 4:00 p.m., when her mother arrived to pick her up.
Discovery and Emergency Response
Staff immediately launched a search and rushed to the school bus, where they found Sofia unconscious inside. Emergency services were swiftly mobilized—including police, volunteer firefighters, a mobile emergency medical and resuscitation unit, and the National Institute of Medical Emergencies’ Mobile Psychological Intervention Unit for Critical Incidents.
Despite intensive resuscitation efforts, Sofia was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation Underway
The case has been taken up by Portugal’s Judicial Police, which is investigating the exact circumstances that led to the child being trapped inside the bus for hours. As reported by Lusa, forensic inspectors and investigative officers have already begun collecting evidence and witness statements to determine how the tragedy occurred and to establish accountability.
