The island of Poros, located in the Saronic Gulf, has been placed under a three-month drought emergency due to severe water shortages during the peak summer period.

Drought Emergency Declared

Greek Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou signed an official decision—following joint approval from the Regulatory Authority for Waste, Energy and Water (RAAEY) and the General Secretary for the Aegean and Island Policy—declaring Poros in a state of emergency due to drought. The measure remains in effect for three months.

What the Emergency Status Means

The declaration activates a special legal framework designed for areas facing serious water resource scarcity. It allows relevant authorities to fast-track essential interventions needed to secure the island’s water supply, including infrastructure upgrades, emergency water deliveries, or temporary regulatory adjustments.

Broader Context

This is not an isolated case: the islands of Tinos and Alonissos were recently placed under similar drought emergency status, highlighting growing pressure on water resources across several Greek islands amid prolonged dry conditions.
