Pope Francis is set to be discharged this Sunday, March 23, 2025, as announced by the medical team at Agostino Gemelli University Polyclinic in Rome. Professor Sergio Alfieri, head of the medical team treating Pope Francis, confirmed late Saturday afternoon that the pontiff will return to Vatican City following his hospital stay. After leaving the hospital, Pope Francis will undergo a two-month rest period while continuing his medication regimen. The medical team noted that the Pope’s health has been improving over the past two weeks. Professor Alfieri emphasized that recovery is often better at home than in a hospital setting. He also explained that Pope Francis will gradually regain his ability to speak without the issues caused by high-flow oxygen treatment. According to the Gemelli hospital medical team, Pope Francis will resume working at the Vatican but with a schedule adjusted to accommodate his recovery. Although he does not currently suffer from severe infections, traces of polymicrobial infection remain. In the near future, Pope Francis may use oxygen when needed at the Vatican. Before being discharged midday Sunday, he will greet the faithful from his room at Gemelli.
