The final, agonizing moments of a family in Pompeii are revealed through a new study. During the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, people attempted to escape the deadly disaster by any means necessary but, unfortunately, they were unsuccessful. According to the study that takes us back to what happened in Pompeii, this particular family tried to lock themselves inside a room during the great catastrophe. During the excavation, impressions of the victims were found in postures of panic, as one might expect from individuals witnessing their impending doom. In an attempt to escape the volcanic ash, the family members sought refuge in a bedroom and barricaded the door with a bed. ‘Excavating and visiting Pompeii means you confront the beauty of art but also the uncertainty of our own lives,’ said the Director of the Park, Gabriel Zuchtrigel, according to DailyMail. ‘In this small, beautifully decorated house, we found traces of the inhabitants who tried to save themselves by blocking the entrance to a small room with a bed, of which we made a cast. This happened because the volcanic rocks that threatened to flood the space entered through the open point in the atrium roof.’ ‘They didn’t succeed. In the end, the pyroclastic flow, a violent stream of extremely hot ash, filled every room here and elsewhere. The seismic tremors had already caused the collapse of many buildings.’ During the excavations, remains of at least four people, including a child, were found. A bronze amulet was discovered, which boys wore until adulthood and likely belonged to the child.
