A significant project is set to be implemented in Piraeus, aiming for the bioclimatic upgrade of the coastal front of Themistocleous Coast. This investment is expected to radically transform the area’s appearance, enhancing both its aesthetics and functionality. The redevelopment project involves constructing a unified network of pedestrian and cycling paths, allowing for seamless movement for walkers and cyclists in the Piraeus area. With a budget of €18,991,935.48, it is funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility. Key interventions include widening sidewalks for greater safety and comfort, creating fully organized cycling paths to promote sustainable mobility, and redesigning open spaces with rest areas for residents and visitors. There will also be new regulations for parking spaces to optimize available space. Beyond public space improvements, the project includes significant infrastructure upgrades such as installing a new stormwater drainage system to prevent flooding and enhance climate management. Lighting will be upgraded using modern fixtures to improve evening safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Urban equipment will be renewed with new trash bins and other elements enhancing the area’s functionality and overall aesthetic. Special emphasis is placed on increasing greenery with new tree and plantings, strengthening the bioclimatic aspect of the renovation. Additionally, special facilities will cater to people with disabilities ensuring full accessibility. The historical and cultural significance of Piraeus is highlighted through this redevelopment, creating a modern promenade for leisure and exercise. These interventions aim to offer a new identity to the area, showcasing its cultural characteristics and providing opportunities for tourism and local economic growth. The project tender process is underway via an open procedure following Greek public procurement laws, selecting based on the most economically advantageous offer. The deadline for bids is April 23, 2025, with the contractor required to complete the work within 12 months of signing the contract. This project is expected to significantly upgrade the region, revitalizing Piraeus and improving daily life for thousands of citizens. Upon completion, it will provide a modern, eco-friendly coastal front, creating new opportunities for the local community and contributing to the sustainable development of the Athenian Riviera.
