Summer holiday travel to Greece’s islands is reaching its peak, with passenger traffic surging at the Port of Piraeus and other Attica ports. On Wednesday, 14 July 2026 alone, a total of 21 ferry departures are scheduled from Piraeus, 15 from Rafina, and 8 from Lavrio — serving thousands of vacationers heading off for their summer breaks.
Minister Kikilias Inspects Operations at Piraeus Port
Early this morning, Vassilis Kikilias, Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, visited the Port of Piraeus to monitor the smooth flow of passenger traffic. During his visit, he spoke with travelers, professional drivers, officers of the Hellenic Coast Guard deployed on-site, and ship crews — exchanging summer wishes and emphasizing safe, stress-free journeys.
“Safety Is Our Top Priority”
In remarks to the press, Minister Kikilias said: “We are at the heart of summer. Every year, 10.7 million people depart from the Port of Piraeus for their island holidays. Here in Piraeus, we have hundreds of Coast Guard personnel — and thousands across all Greek ports — dedicated to public safety and service. I believe our men and women carry out this duty with dignity, courtesy, and professionalism. For us, safety comes above all else.
That’s why I urge everyone — wherever you are, in any port across Greece — to follow the instructions of our Coast Guard officers. I wish all travelers safe journeys and pleasant holidays, and calm seas for our captains and seafarers who transport us safely to and from the islands.”
He added: “This is our Greece — the Greece of beauty, of islands. It is our unique strength and competitive advantage. To truly enjoy our holidays as we should, let’s listen to these dedicated Coast Guard professionals, who are here solely to care for us and keep us safe. I also extend my warm wishes to our seafarers — those who sail us to our destinations and bring us home. I know that throughout this period, and especially up to the height of the August 15 holiday, ferry occupancy rates will continue rising — reaching up to 100%. So I ask for your patience, good humor, and trust in the experts doing their jobs. With that, everything will go smoothly.”
