Greek police arrested a 30-year-old foreign national in Piraeus on Monday, June 15, 2026, for an attempted fraud against a woman. Officers from the Piraeus Directorate for the Investigation and Detection of Crime apprehended the suspect during a sting operation after he tried to trick the victim into handing over jewelry and cash.

Deception Disguised as Law Enforcement

The suspect, acting with an accomplice, posed as officials from a judicial authority. He contacted the woman by phone, claiming she was under investigation and faced imminent danger — either to herself or her relatives — unless she complied with their demands. Under this false pretense, he instructed her to place jewelry and money in a plastic bag and leave it in a nearby trash bin outside her home.

Arrest at the Scene

The woman immediately alerted police, who responded swiftly to the location. As the suspect arrived in a taxi and attempted to retrieve the bag from the bin, officers moved in and arrested him on the spot. Investigators confirmed he had been coordinating with his accomplice via phone during the operation.

Wider Criminal Network

According to preliminary findings, the suspects — part of a larger criminal organization — have been operating since at least April 2025. They impersonated law enforcement or other official figures across Athens and Thessaloniki, targeting vulnerable individuals with threats to life and coercing them into surrendering valuables or cash.

The stolen items were reportedly passed between members of the group and eventually smuggled abroad. To avoid detection, the perpetrators used international calling codes for all communications.

Seized Evidence and Ongoing Investigation

A search of the suspect’s residence yielded €7,060 in cash and a large quantity of jewelry, all seized by authorities. So far, investigators have linked the group to 29 confirmed cases of fraud and extortion in Attica and Thessaloniki, with illicit proceeds totaling €690,000. The overall illegal financial gain attributed to the network exceeds €120,000 — though this figure is part of a broader, still-developing case that includes additional suspects currently at large.

The arrested man has been referred to the competent Public Prosecutor’s Office.
