A rescue operation is currently underway on Mount Olympus in Pieria for a 64-year-old hiker who lost consciousness while hiking along a trail. The alarm was raised with the Hellenic Fire Service early Saturday morning (July 11, 2026).
The hiker is part of a three-person mountaineering group. According to initial reports, he became unresponsive near the ‘Spilios Agapitos’ refuge — a well-known mountain shelter on Mount Olympus, Greece’s highest peak and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Firefighters from the fire stations of Katerini and Litochoro, along with the Mountain Search and Rescue Team of the 2nd Emergency Response Unit (EMAK), are involved in the operation. A total of 12 firefighters are assisting in transporting the man from the refuge to a safe location where an ambulance from the National Center for Direct Aid (EKAB) will take over.
