In Brussels, Greek Finance Minister and Eurogroup President Kyriakos Pierakakis is leading high-level discussions at today’s Eurogroup meeting — with artificial intelligence (AI), digital finance, and Europe’s technological sovereignty taking center stage.

A Broad Economic Agenda

The Eurogroup session will address key macroeconomic priorities shaping the eurozone’s long-term competitiveness. Ministers are set to review the fiscal outlook ahead of national budget preparations for 2027, discuss the international role of the euro, and formally adopt the Eurogroup’s work programme for the coming months.

AI and Cybersecurity in Finance

In an expanded Eurogroup session, ministers will focus on how AI and cybersecurity are transforming the financial sector — and what it will take for Europe to build a robust AI ecosystem and strengthen its technological autonomy. Arthur Mensch, CEO of French AI firm Mistral AI, will participate in the discussion.

Digital Finance Declaration

Ministers are expected to adopt a joint declaration on digital finance, outlining shared ambitions to further develop digital financial services and bolster Europe’s economic competitiveness.

Energy and Economic Security

Pierakakis will host a working dinner for eurozone finance ministers to explore the interlink between energy and economic security. Participants include Dr. Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA); UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves; and Norwegian Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg.

European Tech Champions Initiative 2.0

Tomorrow, Friday, 10 July 2026, Pierakakis will attend the signing ceremony for the European Tech Champions Initiative 2.0 (ETCI II). The initiative establishes a new pan-European investment platform — modelled on the European Investment Fund (EIF) — to support high-tech and innovative European companies through blended public and private capital.

Savings and Investments Union

At the broader ECOFIN Council — bringing together finance ministers from all 27 EU member states — discussions will centre on advancing the Savings and Investments Union (SIU), aiming to channel European savings more effectively into growth-enhancing investments across the bloc.

First Official Meeting with von der Leyen

On the margins of the meetings, Pierakakis will hold his first official bilateral talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The discussion will focus on common European priorities and responses to evolving geopolitical and economic challenges.
