Five individuals arrested in connection with the apartment building collapse in Petralona on Tuesday afternoon (30 June 2026) have been released pending the completion of the investigation. The two property owners and three civil engineers appeared before the public prosecutor in Athens on Wednesday (1 July 2026) for questioning.
Preliminary Investigation Ordered
The prosecutor has ordered a preliminary investigation to determine whether violations of Greece’s building code occurred. All five suspects were released without bail while the probe continues. A criminal file has been opened against them under Article 286 of the Greek Penal Code, which covers urban planning and construction violations.
Focus of the Investigation
Authorities are expected to closely examine the building permit and structural design of the new apartment complex, as well as the foundations of both the newly constructed building and the one that collapsed. One key hypothesis under review is a disparity in foundation depth between the two structures. Investigators are assessing whether the newer building’s deeper foundations may have destabilized the adjacent older structure—potentially causing cracks and tilting during construction.
City Response and Support
Deputy Mayor of Athens Giorgos Apostolopoulos stated: “We are doing everything possible—and will continue to do so—to help affected residents return to normal life. However, this issue is broader in scope. Ultimately, the state must step in, as municipal resources have clear limits.”
According to Andreas Grammatikoyiannis, Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection, affected families are expected to receive an initial emergency payment of €3,000 while full compensation is being determined.
