Peru: Strong Waves Hit Coastlines, Over 90 Ports Closed Amid Maritime Alert

Today (April 12, 2025), Peru has shut down 91 of its 121 ports following a warning about unusually strong waves hitting its coastlines, as announced by the country’s Naval Military authorities. The powerful waves that have been battering Peru’s shores since Friday are expected to continue until Wednesday, according to maritime officials. This phenomenon originates in the open waters off the coast of Chile and primarily affects the southern coastal regions of Peru. Today, the event had ‘moderate intensity with strong swells, and is expected to ease by Wednesday,’ stated Rear Admiral Enrique Barrea of the Hydrographic Directorate of the Naval Military on state television. ‘Port authorities are monitoring to determine whether the ports should remain closed or not,’ he added. The Naval Military also advised the suspension of port and fishing activities and urged citizens to stay out of the water. In Lima, sections of the Gulf highway were closed due to seawater flooding, per official orders. At the end of 2024 and earlier this January, parts of the coasts of both Peru and Chile were hit by strong wave surges and massive waves.
