A devastating fire broke out before dawn on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, in the La Victoria district of Lima, Peru, killing ten people—including five children aged 3, 6, 6, 8, and 15. The blaze erupted around 3:00 a.m. local time and rapidly consumed two adjacent homes.
Victims from One Family
According to Oscar Ariola, head of the Peruvian National Police, nine of the victims belonged to the Vilches family. A tenth person, whose identity and relationship to the family have not been disclosed, also died in the fire.

While no official cause has been confirmed, local media reports suggest arson is being considered as a possible motive—particularly amid reports of an extortion ring operating in the area. That group allegedly threatened a local electric motorcycle rental business located nearby.

The tragedy has drawn national attention and expressions of solidarity. The National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) of Peru confirmed the incident occurred on Pisagua Street, Block 4, in Lima. State news agency Andina described it as a ‘devastating fire’ that claimed ten lives from a single family, underscoring the profound grief felt across the country.
