Greece is entering a new digital era with the introduction of the Personal Identification Number (PIN), a unique 12-digit code that will accompany every citizen throughout their life. Starting June 3, 2025, the platform allows citizens to obtain their PIN, replacing multiple identification numbers like Tax ID (AFM), Social Security Number (AMKA), and identity card numbers. The establishment of the Personal Citizen Number represents a significant step towards the digital transformation of Greece’s public administration. By consolidating identification numbers and simplifying processes, citizens will be able to interact with public services more easily and securely. The PIN aims to streamline procedures and reduce bureaucracy, as citizens will only need to remember one number for all their transactions. Issuance occurs through the myinfo.gov.gr application using Taxisnet codes and a second-factor authentication (OTP) received via the National Communication Register (EMEp). Citizens confirm or correct personal details and select two alphanumeric elements preceding their Tax ID, with the third element automatically generated by the system as a control digit. The PIN will appear on new identity cards and the digital identity in the Gov.gr Wallet, functioning as the citizen’s unique identifier in the digital world. Gradually, it will be used across all public services supporting this functionality. All citizens with a Tax ID can issue a PIN through the application. Those without Taxisnet codes or lacking digital skills can be assisted at Citizen Service Centers (KEP) and Consular Authorities starting June 23. From September 5, 2025, the PIN will be automatically assigned to those who haven’t obtained it voluntarily. Notably, the PIN is issued once per individual, is unique, and remains unchanged.
