The Patras-Pyrgos highway is one of the most iconic infrastructure projects in Western Greece, aiming to enhance road safety and reduce travel time between the two cities, cutting the journey from Athens to Pyrgos to approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. The ongoing project, spanning a total length of 74.8 kilometers, is being implemented by Olympia Odos A.E., in collaboration with AKTOR, AVAX, and GEK Terna. According to recent statements by Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Nikos Tachiou, the progress of the works has exceeded 73%, with the highway’s completion planned in phases by 2025. Specifically, the first section, from Lower Achaea to Pyrgos, measuring 65 kilometers, is expected to open to traffic in July 2025. The second section, from Mitrilogi to Lower Achaea, spanning 10 kilometers, is scheduled for completion by late November 2025, enabling the full operation of the highway. The new Minister, Christos Dimas, has prioritized this project to ensure the government meets its commitment to operationalize the new highway on time. Completion of the highway is expected to significantly boost the economic, social, and cultural development of the region by improving access and facilitating movements for residents and visitors alike. Additionally, discussions are underway regarding the construction of the Pyrgos-Alfeios Junction-Kalo Nero-Tsakona section, which will strengthen the connection between Western and Eastern Peloponnese. The cost of this extension is estimated to start at €700 million, potentially exceeding €1 billion depending on the chosen solution. Upon completion of the Patras-Pyrgos highway, Olympia Odos will become one of the largest highways in Greece, extending by 75 kilometers to a total of 285 kilometers, featuring two traffic lanes, an emergency lane, and a design speed of 120 km/h.
