Police arrested the mother of a 7-month-old baby who was admitted to a Patras hospital with fractures and injuries. The arrest took place on Sunday, 21 June 2026.
Suspected Abuse Leads to Investigation
The infant — a Roma child — was brought to Patras’ Karamandanio Hospital on Saturday after sustaining a femur fracture and scalp abrasions. Doctors treating the baby raised concerns that the injuries may have resulted from abuse and promptly alerted authorities, triggering an investigation.
Mother’s Account and Medical Protocol
The mother told investigators the baby had fallen from its crib while she was preparing milk for her second child. However, according to Michalis Giannakos, president of the Panhellenic Federation of Hospital Doctors (POEDIN), and Vasilis Alexopoulos, director of Karamandanio Hospital, any femur fracture in a child under 12 months is automatically treated as potential abuse until proven otherwise.
The baby remains hospitalized, with doctors describing the injuries as treatable and the child’s overall health condition stable and not cause for concern.
Legal Charges and Next Steps
The mother has been charged with endangering a minor due to negligent supervision. Forensic medical examination is expected in the coming days to determine the exact nature and cause of the infant’s injuries.
