A man who suffered severe injuries on Thursday night (May 22, 2025) in the city center of Patras after being struck by falling marble pieces from a balcony has succumbed to his injuries. The 59-year-old was walking with his wife at the intersection of Rigas Feraiou and Gounari streets when chunks of marble detached from an apartment building’s balcony and hit him. Despite the extraordinary efforts of the doctors to save him, he passed away early Friday morning. Tragically, the man and his wife were heading to a clinic to visit their daughter, who was giving birth. Initially transported to the ‘Agios Andreas’ hospital, he was then urgently transferred to Rio University Hospital for emergency surgery due to his critical condition. Criminal charges have been filed against the company managing the building. The 59-year-old victim was married with two daughters and resided in the Zarouchleika area. The site of the incident remains closed off for public safety. This tragic event has raised significant concerns about the condition of buildings in the city.
