PASOK Criticizes Government Measures: Rental Support and Pensioner Policies Insufficient

in

The latest data from ELSTAT, showing that 19.6% of the Greek population is at risk of poverty compared to 17.9% in 2019, has been used by PASOK to critique recent government announcements regarding the distribution of surpluses and the new support package unveiled on Tuesday. PASOK officials stated that the measures announced by the Prime Minister fail to address the unjust economic policies implemented over the past six years. They emphasized that the benefits of any growth over this period have not significantly improved societal well-being or reduced inequalities. According to PASOK, the surplus celebrated by the government stems not from a radical change in the country’s production model but rather from the fiscal strain on middle and vulnerable classes due to inflationary pressures and indirect taxes like VAT. Regarding rental support, PASOK argued it is insufficient to tackle the severe housing crisis and rising property prices affecting middle-income groups, vulnerable populations, and younger generations. The party also criticized the government for its handling of housing costs, which are now among the highest in Europe relative to disposable income. Furthermore, PASOK described the measures for pensioners as inadequate, pointing out the lack of substantial income boosts such as reinstating EKAS for low-income pensioners and addressing issues like personal differences and solidarity contributions. The modest increase in public investment programs was also noted as unimpressive for Greece’s economic prospects. Meanwhile, Nikos Androulakis is expected to speak to PASOK members this Sunday at the Peace and Friendship Stadium, signaling a relaunch with a focus on mobilization, structured opposition, and expansion.
