A section of the roof collapsed at the international arrivals area in Palma de Mallorca Airport, Spain, causing panic among passengers. Debris and glass fell from the roof in the baggage claim area of Son Sant Joan Airport on the evening of June 24, 2025. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, with vending machines in the arrivals hall sustaining the most damage. However, a loud crash caused significant alarm in the arrivals hall, according to local news site Ultima Hora. Security and airport staff quickly cordoned off the affected area and redirected passengers. Shocking photos shared on social media showed large shards of broken glass and dust scattered across the floor. According to Ultima Hora, several people were using the vending machines when the roof collapsed. Spanish airport authority AENA attributed the collapse to construction debris falling onto a glass roof near the baggage claim entrance. An AENA spokesperson told local media: ‘Airport officials are already investigating what happened to take appropriate measures and determine responsibilities if necessary.’ A British woman heard people exclaiming, ‘My God,’ as a cloud of dust rose from where part of the roof had fallen. One local described Palma’s airport as ‘the worst in Spain’ in a social media post that evening. Renovation works at the airport have been criticized by both employees and air travelers. In January, the fall of a panel and adverse weather conditions led to dust entering the terminal, resulting in complaints. An airport worker stated at the time: ‘Neither workers nor passengers could breathe properly, and many slipped due to the dust on the floor.’ Another employee told Diario de Mallorca: ‘It’s embarrassing to work under such conditions.’ Passengers were also forced to wear masks due to air pollution.
