Shocking witness accounts have emerged following a severe accident that occurred at noon on Thursday, April 17, 2025, in central Athens, specifically in Pangrati. The incident involved a pole falling onto pedestrians after being struck by an ambulance, injuring five people who were subsequently transported to the hospital. Eyewitnesses described hearing a deafening crash and witnessing a harrowing scene. “I heard a ‘bam,’ looked out, and saw that the pole was gone. I went outside and couldn’t believe my eyes. I saw one woman lying down, another crying—it was horrifying,” recounted one witness. Another eyewitness stated, “One woman had blood on her head; another tried to console her. Her leg was trapped under the pole while the other leg was pinned above it.” The private ambulance was traveling up Vasileos Konstantinou Street with sirens blaring, transporting a patient to the hospital. At the height of the National Research Institute, it collided with a white car. The driver lost control, spinning out and crashing into an iron streetlamp, causing it to collapse and strike two unsuspecting women waiting to cross the road. Chaos ensued as five individuals were injured, including the ambulance crew, the patient, and the two women struck by the pole. Two victims remain in critical condition at Evangelismos Hospital. Traffic in the area was disrupted for several hours until emergency services evacuated the injured.
