UEFA has announced the fine imposed on Panathinaikos for breaching the Cost Control regulations related to the club’s European matches in the 2024/25 season. The Greek side will pay a total of €400,000 after being investigated under the second list of cases concerning breaches of ‘squad cost rules’.
During two hearings with UEFA officials, the Greens presented their financial data for future seasons and committed to not exceeding the allowed spending threshold — which is limited to 70% of their revenues. This decision was made to avoid harsher penalties in the future, including potential transfer bans.
In its official statement, UEFA noted: ‘The CFCB found that Aston Villa (England), Chelsea (England), Panathinaikos (Greece), and Besiktas (Turkey) breached the squad cost rule, as they recorded a squad cost ratio above 80% for 2024 (transitional threshold for this year). All the aforementioned clubs showed ratios between 80%-90% and were sanctioned with immediate and unconditional fines proportional to the excess spending.’
Detailed breakdown:
– Chelsea (England): €11 million
– Aston Villa (England): €6 million
– Besiktas (Turkey): €0.9 million
– Panathinaikos (Greece): €0.4 million
