Over 3 billion are expected this year to trade without cash

Over 3 billion without cash in 2024 (296 per capita), as banks estimate. Transactions without nearly tripled over the last five years, reaching 2.7 billion in 2023 (258 per capita). 74% of cashless transactions relate to card transactions. As regards the value of cash-free payments transactions, it amounted to 1.26 trillion euros in 2023, increased by 65% over 2018 (760 billion euros). 89% of the value of transactions (EUR 1.13 trillion) relates to transactions with credit transfers. It is noted that for the first time in 2023 the value of card transactions was higher than cheques. According to TTE data in the Financial Stability Report, frauds in payment card transactions and credit transfers show a significant decrease. However, bankers point out that a new risk is emerging: investment frauds in which sufferers fall on their own initiative. The percentage of these frauds is still very low, but it accounts for 40% of the fraud amounts. In payment card scams there was a decrease of 11% in number and 10% in transaction value in the first half of 2024 compared to 2023. A 38% reduction in the number and 72.5% in the value of fraud transactions occurred in credit transfers in 2023 compared to 2022. According to the findings of the pan-European Payments Europe survey on the landscape of payments for Greece, regarding Greek traders: 83% declares satisfied with available payment solutions 77% agree that card benefits exceed costs 62% prefer to accept digital payments rather than cash payments 65% currently accept direct payments, which exceeds the respective average in Europe (60%). For Greek consumers: 85% believe that the Greek payment market is innovative, and that its payment needs are met 71% considers that cards provide more value than other payment methods 68% trust cards more than other payment methods 66% estimates that within the next 12 months it will make more direct payments than it does today.
