Outrage After Dolphin Fresco Collapse at Knossos Palace

in

The collapse of a significant replica fresco featuring dolphins at the renowned Minoan palace of Knossos has sparked widespread outrage and concern. The incident occurred on Friday (16.05.2025) during strong southern winds, damaging one of the most famous exhibits in the archaeological site near Heraklion. Although the damaged fresco is a reproduction housed within the ancient palace grounds, the original being preserved at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, this event has ignited discussions about conservation practices for one of Crete’s most iconic landmarks. Experts emphasize that the fresco fragment, placed during Sir Arthur Evans’ early 20th-century restoration efforts, is an integral part of the site’s history. Its fall, attributed to inadequate maintenance rather than wind damage, highlights ongoing preservation challenges as debates continue over UNESCO World Heritage recognition for Knossos. The site was temporarily closed due to hazardous conditions caused by fierce winds endangering both visitors and staff.
