Each year, the Oscars honor departed stars of cinema and television in their traditional ‘In Memoriam’ segment. However, during the 2025 Oscars, some notable figures who passed away during the previous year seem to have been overlooked. While significant names such as David Lynch, Maggie Smith, James Earl Jones, and Donald Sutherland were recognized during this emotional segment, others like Tony Todd, Chance Perdomo, Olivia Hussey, and documentarian Morgan Spurlock were not included. A few days before the ceremony, Morgan Freeman paid tribute to Clint Eastwood, with whom he collaborated on ‘Unforgiven’ and ‘Under Suspicion.’ The organizers also honored legendary music producer Quincy Jones, who passed away on November 3, 2024, with a special tribute. Despite the Academy’s efforts, it cannot dedicate unlimited time to name every artist. Consequently, each year, some deserving artists are inevitably left out, often sparking outcry on social media, as noted by Variety. Traditionally, the Academy publishes a more extensive list on its website.
