Greece is facing challenging weather conditions today, with a high risk of wildfires across several regions due to strong winds. The General Secretariat of Civil Protection has issued an orange alert—indicating a very high fire danger level (Category 4)—for Saturday, 27 June.

Areas Under Highest Alert

The highest risk applies to Attica, the Peloponnese, and parts of Central Greece, Western Greece, and the North Aegean. Specific areas include:

  • Attica & Kythira
  • Evia
  • Skyros
  • Boeotia
  • Argolis
  • Corinthia
  • Laconia
  • Lesvos
  • Chios
  • Ikaria
  • Fthiotida
  • Fokida
  • Achaea
  • Ilia
  • Messenia
  • Arcadia

Enhanced Emergency Preparedness

The General Secretariat of Civil Protection has alerted relevant state agencies, regional authorities, and municipalities in these areas to maintain heightened readiness. The Hellenic Fire Service has activated its Stage 2 operational readiness, increasing aerial surveillance patrols and ground patrols by fire, police, and military units.

Fire service personnel in the affected regional units have been placed on partial standby to respond swiftly to any incidents. Additionally, the National Civil Protection Plan for forest fire response is now in effect. Among its measures is the preventive ban on vehicle access and visitor presence in national forests, wooded areas, and other vulnerable zones.

Public Safety Recommendations

Civil Protection and the Fire Service urge citizens to exercise extreme caution outdoors. Activities that could spark fires—including burning dry grass or pruning debris, using spark-producing tools like angle grinders or welding equipment, operating outdoor barbecues, beekeeping-related smoking, and discarding lit cigarettes—must be strictly avoided.
