Optimus Energy has chosen the German company emsys VPP to develop a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) for managing energy stations in the Greek energy market. With a portfolio nearing 4 GW of photovoltaic and wind farms, Optimus Energy holds a leading position in Greece, representing 50% of the Market Schedule share for renewable energy plants participating either through the Feed-in Premium (FiP) mechanism or directly in the market. This collaboration enables Optimus Energy to utilize a proven Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution widely used by aggregators and energy providers across Europe to maximize the value of renewable energy portfolios in short-term energy markets. emsys VPP has already begun creating the Virtual Power Plant for the wholesale energy market and is customizing its software to meet Optimus Energy’s specific needs. The process includes connecting over 3,500 photovoltaic and wind production stations to the VPP, enabling real-time data retrieval and dynamic management of variable energy production. Additionally, energy & meteo systems, a partner of emsys VPP, provides accurate production forecasts for photovoltaic and wind stations, which are integrated into the VPP. The comprehensive software allows Optimus Energy to efficiently manage its portfolio, including reducing production during periods of negative energy prices. Furthermore, emsys VPP offers a tailored solution for providing balancing services—an essential expansion of Optimus Energy’s services in the evolving Greek energy market driven by increasing renewable energy penetration. Participation in the balancing market will benefit both renewable projects by creating an additional revenue source and the power grid by offering greater flexibility aligned with energy transition goals. Stella Zacharia, Managing Consultant at Optimus Energy, stated, ‘Our collaboration with emsys VPP leverages their top-tier software solutions and extensive international expertise, crucial for optimizing our portfolio.’ Dr. Ulrich Focken, Managing Director of emsys VPP and energy & meteo systems, noted that providing the VPP and energy production forecasts supports several Greek companies in managing their renewable energy portfolios, marking a significant milestone in strengthening their market presence.
