Open consultation for the management, protection and development of the Lake Vegoritida

an open consultation was conducted on the management, protection and development of Lake Vegoritida, with the participation of representatives of a large number of local authorities and bodies as well, also, and the so-called civil society. In the meeting participated the Mayor of Edessa, mr. Dimitrios Giannos, the deputy Mayor of Skydra miss. Maria Γιακαμόζη, the Police Director of Pella mr. John Βακουφτσής, the Director of PPC Group, Aliakmon, mr Alexandros Karagiannidis, and the Director of the hydroelectric power station Agra mr John Κρουσταλλακίδης, the Director ΤΟΕΒ Edessa mr. John Tripsianis, members of personnel of the District, the Fire department, of the Army, a group of representatives of the Association for the Protection of Lake Vegoritida, the President of the is HEREBY Edessa mr Stratos Barista, citizens of Edessa, researchers, journalists and others.
During the open consultation of the vice-governor of Pella mr Theodoros Theodoridis presented the current situation of the lake which, in the last few years, tends to rise. Especially after stopping pumping made by the PPC. As there are expressed concerns by farmers in the wider area of the Lake Vegoritida who legally own land which is in danger to be occupied by the rise of the water level, mr. vice-governor reported on the instructions of the Deputy Minister for the operation of the sluice with a critical limit of “1m. below the level of the installations of the biological purification” of the Local Community of St. Panteleimon. Mr. Theodoridis has also been reported in institutional, legal and environmental conditions for the operation of the sluice, and stressed that the aim and desire of all of us is to protect the legitimate growers, to complete the study definition of an upper and lower level for the management measures of the lake, and proceed with the implementation of projects and actions that will protect and make best use of the lake with the creation of main and supplementary income for the inhabitants. The intention of the Regional Unit Pella is making a special one-day Conference, in the Autumn, on the subject of Sustainable management of the Lake Vegoritida.
The Head of Civil Protection mr Christos Μπιμπίτσος set the framework of the consultation (analysis of the situation with environmental, social and economic criteria), while the Geologist Engineer mr. Σίφης Papadopoulos presented the current situation and alternative models of assessment of impacts on land uses from the rising water level of the lake, with the technology of Geographic Information Systems.
The Mayor of Edessa and the deputy Mayor of Skydra reported in the risk of causing flooding from the possible operation of the sluice and on the Decisions taken by the respective Municipal Councils, with the understanding, however, the concern of farmers who feel that the risk of the land from the rising of the lake.
A debate ensued between the παραβρισκόμενων for the individual management aspects of the Lake Vegoritida, in view of the organization’s top events (6th half marathon and pan-hellenic swimming races) that will be prominent in the lake and the surrounding area.
The completion of the Special Environmental Study and the creation of a Management Body, is not the solution for the rational management of the Lake, as proposed by a representative of the Association for the Protection of Lake Vegoritida and the strain of the Department of Environment and Υδροοικονομίας mr Stefano Argyrakis.
The vice-governor of Pella mr Theodoros Theodoridis thanked the delegates for their participation in the meeting and stressed the importance of the activation of the state, so in a timely manner and in agreement with the existing institutional and legal framework to complete the necessary studies and management plans and, at the same time, to put in place the appropriate management measures.
