One Train Ticket Across Europe

One Train Ticket to Travel Across Europe – EU Unveils New Rules for Simpler Journeys

—

in

The European Union has unveiled a new system to make cross-border train travel across Europe simpler, faster, and more affordable. Approved by the European Commission on 13 May 2026, three key proposals aim to streamline trip planning and ticket bookings—especially for journeys involving multiple rail operators—and strengthen passenger rights throughout the entire journey.

A Single Ticket, Multiple Operators

Under the new rules, passengers will be able to book combined rail services from different national and regional train companies through a single, integrated ticket. This ticket can be purchased in one transaction via either an independent booking platform or the official sales channel of a railway operator.

The initiative requires rail companies to share their ticket data with third-party platforms that wish to resell them. As European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas explained during the announcement, this move is designed to increase transparency and consumer choice. It also enables multi-modal travel—combining trains with other transport options like buses or bikes—through unified booking interfaces.

Stronger Passenger Protections

Passengers holding these integrated tickets will benefit from enhanced rights if disruptions occur—such as missing a connecting service at an intermediate stop. These include assistance, re-routing, refunds, and compensation. The rules also introduce new obligations for both ticketing platforms and rail operators to ensure fair access and neutral presentation of travel options.

Platforms must display offers without bias—including, where feasible, sorting options by greenhouse gas emissions—so travelers can make informed, sustainable choices. The goal is to make rail travel across Europe more seamless, stress-free, and competitive with other modes of transport.
