Old quarry turned into majestic canyon!

The Velká Amerika (Big America) is an abandoned limestone quarry located near the village of Morena, in the…
Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, just a few kilometres from Prague. The Czechs call it affectionately the “Grand Canyon” of the Czech republic, with the natural beauty to be admired of those who visit it.

The quarrying began in the region in the late 19th century as a response to the great demand for limestone. The mining activities increased again after the first World War, to stop the operation of the mines in 1963, with rain water to fill the opening, forming a lake at the bottom.
