Support for Ukraine must continue through economic and military means, emphasized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz after the London Conference. ‘Ukraine is the country that has been attacked; it is the victim of Russian aggression. This is the truth and it is clear to everyone, which means we must act accordingly,’ Scholz notably stated after the meeting in London. The biggest supporters of Ukraine are the USA and Germany, Scholz noted, mentioning that Berlin alone has allocated 4.4 billion euros so far. ‘Therefore, international and transatlantic support for Ukraine remains crucial for the security of the country and Europe,’ he added, referring to the Friday (28/02/2025) meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and former U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House. Scholz further highlighted the necessity of ensuring Ukraine’s ability to defend itself with a strong army as the core of any future peace framework. He stressed that all security architectures should be based on this principle, affecting the future security architecture of Europe. Additionally, Scholz reiterated that Ukraine is a European country deciding to join the European Union—a democratic and sovereign nation that must remain so. He also addressed the importance of discussing these issues during the upcoming EU summit, focusing on how member states can increase defense spending and improve European cooperation for better self-reliance in security matters. Scholz concluded by emphasizing the significance of transatlantic cooperation within NATO and the shared responsibility between European states and the USA in supporting Ukraine’s defense.
