Official: Germany willing to boost ECB capital
BRUSSELS (AP) – Germany would be willing to support the European Central Bank with more capital if the bank said that was necessary, a government official said – a step that would reinforce the ECB’s finances as it tries to contain the continent’s debt crisis.

This would pose a threat to Turkey’s European Union accession bid. STORY: Counting has begun after Turkish Cypriots voted in parliamentary elections on Sunday. Analysts say the results could complicate the divided island’s peace process, as the polls have signalled victory for the National Unity Party (UBP). The UBP wants a tougher line in reunification talks with Greek Cypriots. But peace negotiator Mehmet Ali Talat will retain his leadership of the mini-state whatever the results of the election, even though his allies may be replaced. The island has been divided since a Turkish invasion in 1974 triggered by a Greek inspired coup. Greek Cypriots represent Cyprus in the European Union, and say they will not allow Turkey to join the bloc as long as the island remains divided.
