Mexico, is preparing to welcome the 15,000 as 20,000 visitors today for the beginning of the new era of the Mayan calendar, announced local officials.
“We expect 15 to 20 thousand visitors today,” said a representative of the National Institute of Anthropology and History, responsible for the preservation of the natural heritage of the country.
“It will be a normal day for the visitors, with regular hours”, he clarified and added that no particular ceremony or events for the end of the cycle of 5.200 years of the Mayan calendar, interpreted by some as a prophecy about the end of the world.
In the center of the great archaeological area of Chichen Ιτζά is the great pyramid of Kukulkan, which in each of the four sides has 91 steps, and the days of each season. Since 2007, the Chichen Ιτζά included in the New Seven Wonders of the World. Also has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1988.
Last Thursday, thousands of visitors including many foreigners have visited the archaeological site. A large attendance is expected, and in other archaeological sites in Guatemala, el Salvador and Honduras.
