A tragic fire at an unlicensed nightclub in Kocani, North Macedonia, has claimed the lives of 59 people and injured 155. The incident occurred during a concert on Sunday, March 16, 2025, when sparks from pyrotechnics ignited the roof of the club. Within minutes, panic ensued as attendees rushed to escape. Many were trampled, while others burned alive. Victims ranged in age from 16 to 22 years old. Relatives anxiously awaited news outside hospitals in Kocani and Skopje, where victims were transported. Authorities have launched an investigation into potential corruption surrounding the club’s illegal operation. Interior Minister Pantse Toskovski stated that the establishment lacked proper permits. Over 20 individuals are under suspicion, including members of the popular hip-hop group DNK, who were performing at the time. Five prosecutors are leading the investigation. Meanwhile, Greece has stepped in to assist with medical care, accepting 18 burn victims for treatment in hospitals across Athens and Thessaloniki.
