Revealing and indicative of the conditions that led to the tragedy with 59 deaths at the club in Kocani, were the statements made on Wednesday evening (19/3/25) by the Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Christian Mishkoski. Mishkoski stated that accountability for the Kocani club tragedy would extend to anyone involved, regardless of their political affiliation, nationality, or religion. So far, 26 individuals have been arrested, including former Economy Minister Kresnik Bektashi, who is under investigation for issuing a fake operating license to the nightclub during his tenure. According to ERT, Mishkoski revealed during an interview with the Skopje-based private station ‘Sitel’ that recent spot checks on approximately 60-70 health interest businesses showed that at least half either lacked proper licenses or failed to meet necessary safety standards. The Prime Minister emphasized that such establishments will be prohibited from future operation and announced intensified inspections. Mishkoski highlighted that the Kocani tragedy symbolizes widespread corruption within the country and pledged an anti-corruption campaign. Additionally, public employees in Kocani are excused from work tomorrow (20/3/25) to attend the funerals scheduled for midday, with the government advising local authorities and private firms to do the same.
