After countless revelations, articles, and accusations, North Korea officially confirmed on Sunday (April 27, 2025) that it had sent troops to Kursk, under Ukrainian control, aiming to support Russian forces. The official news agency KCNA stated that North Korean military units participated in the ‘liberation operations’ of Kursk regions held by Ukraine, asserting that their involvement in the conflict on behalf of Russia ended victoriously. ‘Those who fought for justice are all heroes and represent the honor of the homeland,’ declared North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, according to KCNA. A monument honoring their ‘heroic deeds in battle’ will soon be erected in Pyongyang. For months, Kyiv, Seoul, and Western capitals repeatedly accused North Korea of deploying thousands of troops, which neither Moscow nor Kyiv had officially acknowledged until now. In June 2024, Russia and North Korea signed a defense agreement ensuring mutual defense if either nation were attacked. This marks the first official confirmation of North Korean troop deployment to Russia, despite previous denials from Kyiv labeled as ‘false propaganda.’ Speaking at a recent event, Russian Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov praised the ‘heroism’ of North Korean soldiers involved in retaking the region—marking Moscow’s first acknowledgment of their participation. He highlighted their professionalism, resilience, courage, and heroism in repelling the Ukrainian offensive. Despite setbacks, Ukrainian forces continue operations in the area, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy insisting on ongoing efforts in Kursk. The U.S. State Department expressed concern over North Korea’s direct involvement and urged an end to its military expansion in Russia. Third countries, including North Korea, bear responsibility for escalating armed conflicts, the department added, indirectly referencing China.
