The deadline for the national elevator census has been confirmed as final: all elevators in Greece must be registered in the Elevator Census Registry by June 30, 2026. This decision was reached during a working meeting involving the Independent Authority for Market Control and Consumer Protection (AAEMK), the General Secretariat for Industry at the Ministry of Development, the Authority’s Administration, the Executive Board of PETAK (Hellenic Association of Lift Engineers), the Executive Board of POBESA (Hellenic Federation of Building Contractors), and the Executive Board of POMIDA (Hellenic Federation of Elevator Maintenance Companies).
Smooth Progress, Final Push Underway
According to participants, the registration process is progressing smoothly and has reached highly satisfactory levels—particularly for elevators under systematic maintenance. As of June 19, 2026, a total of 286,324 elevators had been registered, up from 263,087 on November 30, 2025. Based on ELSTAT’s latest estimates, approximately 310,000 elevators are installed across the country—meaning over 92% of the estimated total has already been recorded.
No Further Extensions Possible
The General Secretariat for Industry emphasized that the legal framework allowed only one extension to the original deadline—and that option has already been used. Therefore, no further postponement will be granted.
Urgent Call for Final Registrations
In the final days before June 30, stakeholders are urging owners, building managers, and maintenance companies to complete any remaining registrations without delay. The goal is to ensure no elevator is left out of the official registry.
What Comes Next?
Once the census concludes, authorities will use the comprehensive data to design more targeted oversight policies—focusing on risk prevention, safety assurance, and continuous improvement of elevator operation. Collaboration between the state and industry representatives will be key to shaping these future measures.
Strict Enforcement After June 30
The Independent Authority warned that after the deadline expires, rigorous inspections will begin. Non-compliant parties—including owners or operators who fail to register—will face significant administrative penalties.
Who Must Register?
The census applies to all elevators nationwide—without exception. This includes those in apartment buildings, office complexes, hotels, commercial premises, and mixed-use facilities—even if they’ve previously been certified or listed in other registries.
The General Secretariat for Industry urges property owners and managers to dedicate just five minutes to complete the registration process online before the deadline.
